Rolling Stone’s Top 100 songs of 2007. There’s a lot to hate about this list, but there are some things to like about it as well. It’s really no shocker that Rolling Stone always has older artists ranked higher than they should be, they’re trying to get older people to buy their magazine because they grew up with rock and roll in Rolling Stone too, and that’s the source they still want to look for. So, it doesn’t hurt for RS to put Springsteen and Plant and Randy Newman in the higher ranks. Old guys reading RS can say “Wow, those old guys are still better than all of the shit that comes out nowadays. Man, I miss the good old days.”
Readers of PASTE magazine choose the best in music, film, books and TV for 2007.
I guess I’m floating’s top 25 albums of the year. I’ve only been reading this blog for a short amount of time, but having an Animal Collective-Radiohead-Panda Bear top 3 is about as surprising as Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds publicly denying taking steroids. Of course those were going to be the top three. The rest of the top 25 is pretty solid, an intriguing read nonetheless.
The Onion AV Club, kicking ass like always. This might be the best year-end list yet. Unfortunately, I haven’t got around to making a Best Of: Year-end Best-of List yet.
Wired’s most-traded music, movies and TV of 2007. This probably paints the most accurate picture of what the younger generations are listening to these days. Turn up the bass and crank that like a rockstar because this is why I’m hot. This new brand of music has to be pitch-correction’s biggest victory since Cher’s “Believe.”
Pretty Much Amazing celebrates the very best in ‘07 with Arcade Fire gaining best album “honors.” I still don’t understand why everyone is head over heels in love with that album. “Neon Bible’s” best song is a remake of an old EP track that was better off the first time. (“No Cars Go,” obviously) There’s something like 600 more lists to check out as well, including Best Song, Best Covers, Best Music Video and a list of Songs That Made Us Cringe. In case you were wondering, yes, Soulja Boy claimed the top spot.
Glide – Ten Anticipated Albums and Artists to hear in 2008.
HARP – Artists’ best-of part 1 and 2. So much about the National is explained in their top 10. #1 Andrew Bird? I didn’t see ‘goofy, nonsensical whistling’ listed as an influence on their myspace page.
NME's top stories of ‘07.
Blender’s top 10 concerts of 07.
PASTE magazine’s 100 best living songwriters. It might not be exciting to put Radiohead in the top 20, but there’s no excuse not to.
